The CBD confusion is real. Sure, everyone’s heard of it, but not everyone fully understands it (there’s a ton of mixed information out there). Here, we answer your most frequently asked questions so you can make a more informed choice about your own wellness and self-care.
What is CBD?
CBD, short for Cannabidiol, is one of more than 100 naturally occurring phytocannabinoids found in the Cannabis plant. It is also one of the most abundant and heavily researched cannabinoids and does not produce any intoxicating effects. CBD is typically derived from hemp, which is a species of Cannabis that yields high CBD and low THC (the cannabinoid that induces an intoxicating effect). CBD provides an abundance of health-enhancing benefits without the high.
How does CBD work in the body?
We have a vast network of cell receptors throughout our body and brain that help to regulate everything from appetite and pain to memory and mood. It’s called the Endocannabinoid System (ECS) and its sole purpose is to help our bodies reach homeostasis or balance.
Our bodies naturally produce endocannabinoids to support this system, but like any nutrient, we can become deficient in endocannabinoids, which results in an imbalance of our ECS. Enter CBD. Because CBD is a cannabinoid, it synergistically interacts and stimulates our ECS to help bring our bodies back to homeostasis.
What is the difference between CBD isolate and full-spectrum?
CBD Isolate is the crystalline powder form of CBD. In this form, all other plant matter—oils, waxes, flavonoids and additional cannabinoids, like THC—are removed. Full-Spectrum contains the full range of cannabinoids and other matter found in the plant.
What’s the difference between hemp seed oil and CBD oil?
Hemp seed oil, also referred to as cannabis sativa seed oil, is a highly nutritious oil extracted from the hemp seed. It does not contain any of the plant’s cannabinoids. Hemp seed oil is high in antioxidants and omega-3 and 6 fatty acids, which makes it a wonderful addition to your wellness and skincare products. CBD oil is extracted from the whole plant (not just the seeds) and provides broader health benefits.
What’s the best way to take CBD Oil?
The best and most effective way to dose CBD oil is under your tongue, or sublingually. Hundreds of capillaries under your tongue provide a direct route of absorption to the bloodstream. It’s important to hold the oil under your tongue for 30 to 60 seconds before swallowing for optimal absorption.
Will CBD get me high?
Absolutely not. CBD is non-intoxicating, which means it will not cause any psychological impairment or euphoric feeling.
