Is Dosing CBD Sublingually The Most Effective Delivery?

We’re often asked why we recommend dosing our CBD Oil sublingually, or under the tongue, and not just directly into the mouth or added to your afternoon cup of tea. While all of the above are perfectly fine and acceptable ways to dose your CBD (we love putting it in our coffee, tea and smoothies), our preferred and top line recommendation is sublingual for one simple reason: bioavailability.

Bioavailability is the extent and rate at which your body absorbs a substance. Sublingual dosing is a more bioavailable delivery because the CBD is absorbed directly into your bloodstream. The area under your tongue has thousands of capillaries, tiny blood vessels connecting arteries to veins. The sublingual method of delivery—holding it under your tongue for 30 to 60 seconds—allows the CBD to directly absorb more quickly and more effectively. On the contrary, when you ingest CBD orally, via coffee, a capsule or a gummy, it has to go through the digestive system, which includes being metabolized by the liver. While you will experience benefits dosing orally, sublingual dosing typically provides faster results (think of it as a shortcut to relief). Additionally, because sublingual dosing bypasses the liver, you may be able to take a smaller dose and still feel the wonderful effects.

The amount of CBD you dose can vary from person to person. We always suggest starting with a small dose (¼ dropper), seeing how you feel and then working your way up to your optimal level, which is where you experience symptom relief. Some people may experience symptom relief immediately, while others could take up to a few weeks to reap the benefits. This is why consistent dosing is key. If pain is one of your symptoms, dosing CBD Oil sublingually and applying CBD topically to the area of discomfort can speed up the feel-better results.

The bottom line: There is truth to sublingual dosing being the most effective, when it comes to CBD. There are supplements and medications that are more effective dosed orally. Always speak with your practitioner regarding the best way to dose any supplements you plan to start.
